Goal setting is fundamental for any entrepreneur. As a strategy for success, goals ensure that you are always pushing yourself forward, always aware of what the next step will be.
When setting out your business goals, our business coaching team has nine tips for you to consider.
1. Set 1 major goal
When you sit down to consider your business goals, it’s important to push your limits but not overload yourself. It may be that you want to be making a certain amount of revenue by this time next year, or have your own offices set up. In sticking to one goal big but achievable, you must be able to maintain a level of focus.
Break up your main goal into smaller sub-goals. This is an easy way to see your progress in action, keeping you motivated. For instance, if your goal is to attract more clients, set a goal of so many per month so you can see the numbers build gradually. While doing this, you can integrate tip number 3.
3. Measure and track your progress
While working through your sub-goals, track what you have achieved so far. This doesn’t have to mean producing a graph with lines creeping upwards – you can compare revenue month by month, or make a note of how many people have visited your website this month compared with last. By keeping track of progress, women in business can see clearly how far they have come, and there is no better motivation than that.
4. Create a plan
It’s great having goals, but how do you plan on achieving them? You have your major goal, now you must qualify how exactly you will achieve it. This could focus on marketing techniques, communication, or increased productivity. It’s a good idea to consider alternatives, ensuring that there is more than one way to reach your goal.
Visualisation is a powerful tool. Take some time to write down what you want from your goals and why you want it. This can be a writing process that’s part of the plan, and you will quickly see how your motivation levels peak. When you have moments of self-doubt, sit and visualise again what you are hoping to get out of the whole process.
6. Be realistic
While being idealistic, you must always also be realistic. Set yourself challenging goals in order to be continually moving forward and learning, but don’t set goals that are impossible to achieve. Don’t set yourself up to fail. Leave room for the unexpected, and leave room for breathing space.
7. Adjust your plan when needed
If things do not seem to be going as you had hoped, there is no shame in changing tactics. You cannot predict the future. By providing alternative plans of attack, you will be prepared for all possibilities. All women in business have had to rethink their goals at some point, and this is part of the learning curve.
8. Share your goals
Telling friends, family and colleagues your goals will allow you to hear out loud what you are working towards. Those people will play witness to your achievements along the way. Celebrate with them when you have reached a milestone, and discuss options with them when you reach a bump in the road. Accepting input from others can also help you to remain realistic.
9. Reward yourself
See each sub-goal for what it is: another small achievement. If you continue to work without appreciating what you have achieved, your motivation levels will drop and you may begin to forget what you are working towards.
